This is a representation of New Zealand's largest inhabited Islands and the overall theme of the design is to show who, and where, we are.
The North and South Islands are represented by ferns (a widely recognised symbol of New Zealand) with the next three largest inhabited islands (Stewart, Chatham and Great Barrier) being represented by stars. A fourth star is included to complete the Southern Cross - a feature of the current New Zealand Flag and also a reference to where we are, in the Southern Hemisphere. The fourth star is an outline only to show that it is not intended to represent an island.
The colours of black and white are used as they are what I associate with New Zealand and are presently used by a wide array of sporting teams, cultural organisations, Government Departments and Kiwi Businesses when expressing who we are.
The ferns used are the "Kyle Lockwood Design" although any alternative stylised ferns could be used.
