My flag design is named 'Kotahitanga', which in Maori means oneness, unity, reciprocity and respect - all values that are required when differing peoples come together to form a nation and indeed the values that form the basis of any healthy nation today. The design melds the Maori National (Tino Rangatiratanga) Flag into the Union Jack, thereby representing the coming together and unity of Maori and Pakeha with the formation of this nation. When reading from left to right the shape representing Maori is first in the design acknowledging the fact Maori were the original custodians of Aotearoa. The unity being formed under South Pacific skies is represented by the Southern Cross also featuring in the design. The Tino Rangatiratanga flag was designed by Hiraina Marsden, Jan Smith and Linda Munn.
