We are the first country to see the light. Such an epithet behoves us to focus on our special place in the world. Our earliest settlers sailed here in great waka, adventuring into the unknown, perhaps a thousand years ahead of any others. Ever since, something about our location has often spurred the people of this land to be the first, to take a new path, to try doing things differently, and always with a certain edginess that we must rely on ourselves to make things work, being here on the other side of the world. We're a strange and complex people too, often wishing to hold on to the past more than most, but then just as strongly seeking our next world-beating move. So let us make our flag anew, to represent our special nature, the people at Earth's furthest end, forever ruminating on our past, yet striving always to be first.
