New day : ra hou
Black, White and Blue positioned to represent New Zealand as one of the first countries to see the new day.
The Red and white stars symbolise our position in the Southern Hemisphere, link to the old flag, keeps our brotherly link with Australia, and remembers the blood that had been shed for our freedom.
The White fern represents a pure Aotearoa "Land of the long white cloud" and shows the world that we are "clean and green". The fern leaves also look like sails reflecting on the water symbolising our ancestor's travel by sea to get here.
The Black represents pride, strength and brings in the obvious national colour as well as bringing all of the colours of the Maori flag too.
The Blue represents the pacific ocean and clean blue skies.
