Attempt to create a clean design that will not date easily. Containing important symbolism without being cluttered or having cliches. The red in the left represents the Maori people - reinforced by the abstract koru signifying the long white cloud. A simplified outline of the country contains green for the natural beauty. In the foreground stands a white mountain - for the southern alps and a representation of our strength. The shapes in the bottom right call back to the Union Jack and our colonial past. Blue for the ocean, and red for the first ships. The Southern Cross most familiar to the New Zealanders shines above the night sky. Composed from simple shapes layered on each other - easy for anyone to recreate (especially children) Bright colours and bold shapes - make the flag easily recognisable among others.
