This is the inverted version of my flag 'The Fern'
A national flag should represent all inhabitants of its country. The reason I have chosen the fern is that it is inclusive, of nature and historical (it existed in NZ before anyone arrived!!) It does not represent one religion, one culture or one race.
But it can represent one nation.
Black is our national colour, it is distinctive, original and stylish. I think we need to move away from the red, white and blue of the Union Jack.
Influences on the design were:
Stacey Shaw, who designed a black and white fern flag a few years ago.
Kyle Lockwood, whose flag lead the way in using the fern, without it looking like All Black merchandise.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser, my artistic hero and designer of one of the first alternative flag designs.
The stem forms an upward path. Leading toward a bright positive future.
The two tones represent the black sands of the west and white sands of the east coast.
With a little imagination, the flag in normal view represents a 'Z', and a 'N' in reverse.
