A "simple" flag is to represent all NZ without the union jack to overly emphasis one part of our history. The black and red stars represent the Māori culture, the blue and red the Pākehā. The very fine white line is not intended to show divide, but was aesthetically pleasing, adding the the impact of the image.
My intent was that the stars were our shared culture, bridging the historic cultural gap.
Clearly I've been inspired by many people's designs, but what I've tried to do is simplify. to avoid the overly complex or busy designs and take it back to the simple unifying element of the southern cross on a plain background. Too many of the designs look like marketing material rather than flags. I want our flag to be dignified in it's simplicity.
