This fern variation is made up of “No. 8’s”, a subtle play on number 8 wire and kiwi ingenuity.
The fern in my design represents freshness, growth, peace, and an innovative and environmentally aware New Zealand. It is purposely curved crescent moon shape to work aesthetically with the stars to the right.
Green, black and white are all colours that we are known by and stand for on an international stage, and have significance to New Zealand and to Maori.
The pounamu green background represents the importance of nature, conservation and enjoyment of our land with its unique fauna and species.
The striking red stripe off centre is there out of respect to Maori the original inhabitants of NZ a colour often seen in their designs, and also to remind us lest we forget those who have fought and died defending and forging this country as we know it today.
The Southern Cross is a nod to flags past. Stars in white on a night black sky combined with the red reflecting the colours of our Maori culture, and also I feel give the design mana and strength.
