The Southern Fern
The Southern Cross and the silver fern are so much a part of our national consciousness that they barely need explaining. The cross is the celestial marker of our place in the world. The fern is part of our identity.
The colours represent New Zealand.
White is of the stars and the silver fern.
Black is of ‘the dark sacred night’.
Red is the colour of living and being, of passion and strength, of the people of the land. I have used a rich, earthy red because it is a New Zealand colour, like the warm green of our forests. The combination of colours pays homage to the tino rangatiratanga flag.
The red base follows the spine of the fern and happily creates a landscape. The fern will look good moving in the wind as the flag flies.
