This design keeps the colour and southern cross design of the current flag, retaining a sense of history and appreciation of where we have come from. It adds a forward facing triangle which symbolises our shared heritage and desire to shape our nation together as we move into the future.
New Zealanders are resourceful, independent and creative. They do things in innovative ways that cut through established thinking and methods. The triangle can also be seen as the prow of a ship or canoe. A collective force that ignores the way things have always been done, breaks through and chooses to create our own story.
The darkness of the triangle brings up images of mountains reflected in still lakes rising up to the sky. New Zealanders are deeply connected to the land, it is part of our identity at home and out in the world.
