I prefer a blue-green flag for our National Flag, using the colours of nature to represent the beauty of our country. Blue-Green has a peaceful look, yet not without courage as represented by the red stars. However for domestic use one could also have a Flag of Honour (or Mana Flag) to honour New Zealanders' cultural, sporting and other achievements involving courage and determination.
This flag features the black, white and red colours often used in Maori meeting-houses and decorations. The flag borrows both from common sports flags and Maori flags, but is neither one nor the other. Some people, first seeing this proposal, are drawn to the black-red flag because it is visually striking, yet on reflection they do not want to live under a black flag or be represented internationally by black. In keeping it for Flag of Honour, representing courage and determination, we get the opportunity to use both colour combinations. It also honours Maori by taking a colour combination associated with them and making it a mark of mana for courageous acheivers at a national level.
