Black and white are the most recognized colors of New Zealanders internationally through our sporting teams and especially the popularity of the all blacks. Black, white and red are also colors used on our Maori flag. The flag depicts sailing boats, because New Zealand was discovered via the sea. The red boats are sailing in the sunlight and the white boats are sailing in the moonlight, moving unceasingly as well as representing perseverance. The boats themselves also represent 'cups of plenty' and the boats are moving along types of Koru denoting new life and movement. The stars represent the time / date line and four are used, remembering our Southern Cross.
