This flag is based around the Maori name for New Zealand and brings together strong symbols, colours and ideas to represent what we want to stand for as a nation.
Blue background for the clear ocean and sky surrounding our South Pacific location.
Green koru form reaching up to represent our land, or a frond of growth, or the prow of a waka forging ahead.
The white koru form above for the long white cloud over our islands and peoples.
The design is simple, bold, uncluttered and balanced, and can be easily viewed from either side. It combines a mix of symmetry and asymmetry to good effect. It uses recognisable national symbols and colours to work at different scales, in all contexts, to stand the test of time.
I believe this is a bold, elegant and recognisable form to represent our nation both now and into the future.
I gratefully acknowledge the use in my design of the elegant, stylised koru forms as pioneered by the legendary Gordon Walters.
