(The fronds have been aligned to a more traditional fern structure)
The Fern is our national emblem. Black and white are our national colours, there’s no escaping it. The challenge is to come up with a unique flag that does more than represent 15 testosterone fuelled blokes providing pleasure and pain to a nation obsessed with sport.
A new New Zealand flag should be one that is simple, original and able to be embraced by all who choose to call Aotearoa home. ‘The Fern’ is a mature Koru, suitable for a nation that no longer needs to reference it’s colonial past. It is non-religious, culturally inclusive and of course will look fantastic when fluttering in Wellington’s gentle breeze.
For me, unity, journey, equality, harmony, history, nature and maturity are all evoked by this flag. The black sands of the west and white of the east, the 16 regions of our nation and even the upward inflection of our speech can be represented by this elegant two-toned fern.
I hope that I have been able to create a unique and distinctive flag for all New Zealanders.
