This graphic is a representation of the Maori proclamation that New Zealand is the ‘Land of the Long White Cloud’. The land is represented as a line of red stars, which are offset below a line of seven blue stars (clouds).
The red stars represent the Southern Cross. Red is a reference to Papatuanuku (the earth mother, and therefore references the land). The blue stars represent Matariki/Palisades, their graphic is more airy and floating, like clouds.
The Southern Cross is not viewable in the northern hemisphere, so fixes New Zealand’s location in the south. Whereas, Matariki is viewable globally, which suggests that New Zealand is a multi-cultural society.
The black ground is a field of potentiality. Our national sporting colour, bold, proud.
This stars graphic along with Aotearoa New Zealand White is the nucleus of my flag design series. All colours are drawn from the present New Zealand Flag and the Maori Flag.
