I have used a twelve-pointed sun from a design by Peter Simon in this gallery.
The design symbolizes the myth of Maui and the Sun, Ra.
The white koru motifs represent both the “long white cloud” and also the ropes used by Maui and his brothers to capture the Sun, compelling him to serve the People.
Hence, this flag is about the Treaty of Waitangi, being the foundation of our nation and the cornerstone of our constitutional democracy, which unites all the peoples of this land, in the same way we are united under Magna Carta.
Under these circumstances, the sun symbolizes constitutional government as the servant of the People, and then our guiding stars are multi-colored to represent multi-culturalism and pluralism.
