This flag represents the key aspects of what makes New Zealand the unique and beautiful country that it is. This flag stands for equality, culture, pride and our history as a nation.
I have included the silver fern as it has been an icon of pride for New Zealand in the sports arena and it also reflects our beautiful native plants and landscape. The koru on the fern represents our Maori heritage as well as its meanings of strength and peace. The southern cross I have used is a small reminder of the old flag as I feel many New Zealander's would like a small aspect of the old flag to be represented on the new flag, as to respect its heritage. The black colour is an iconic New Zealand colour eg. (All Blacks uniform) so I have chosen to use it alongside the dark blue. The dark blue colour is a reference to the British heritage of New Zealand. The diagonal split is to show a balance of cultures combining to become one country.
