I copied the basic simple koru design from http://logozu.net/maori-designs-koru.htm. I flipped the design around a vertical axis to position the koru in the right third of the flag and keep the top left third for an additional symbol, the Southern Cross. The Southern Cross holds the honor position to represent our unique location in the southern hemisphere, the connection with our neighbour Australia and to reference our previous flag. The blue mostly represents our clean sky but also the ocean where it curls into the koru in a wave. The green is our land and could be a bush colour as shown or a more agricultural green. White provides the contrast and depicts the combined wave and koru symbol for land and sea. The koru repesents life, growth and origin. Stretching the image symbolism I also see the koru and wave as a link or join. On the obvious level of seas and land (nature) but on some level it represents linked hands... people helping each other as a family, community and nation. I submitted an image in the text version of this website but this design replaces it. This is an adaptation of the Tino Rangatiratanga design.
