The Koekoeā or Long-tailed cuckoo breed only in New Zealand. They migrate mainly to islands east of Fiji, including French Polynesia, but also further west into Micronesia.
During the migration across the Pacific, birds gave a many clues for navigation, survival and land. The Koekoeā was one of these birds. It would fly south during the summer months to breed. This indicated to the Navigators that there was a land to the south which led to the eventual discovery of Aotearoa.
We are on a constant journey in life always searching for answers, ways forward and pushing the boundaries of innovation, creation, and progression. We do our best in our journeys knowing we have a Kohunga, a home to go back to and feel secure just like the Koekoeā.
We are a small nation of explorers. The stars show the guidance system used to navigate and remind us of our pacific heritage. The Korus are growth, both individually, spiritually and as a nation. The colours are from Teno Rangatiriatanga being the Red - Life Blood, White - Spiritual, and Black - Earth. Yellow stars as they are shiny so as to stand out.
