This flag is an evolution of the 1902 ensign. It takes the same background colour and southern cross image from that flag. Two simple stylised korus are added (the koru shape is similar to other design suggestions on the flag website). The korus represent NZ's connection to the land (through the choice of white for the long white cloud and green for the land) and the positioning of the korus in relation to each other give the sense of unification and inclusion which can be linked to the bicultural and multicultural aspects of modern New Zealand. The blue flag background represents both sea and sky. The red in the stars on the Southern Cross (while the same as the 1902 flag) represent the sacrifice of the many ancestors who founded our country and also those who have fought and died in the NZ armed forces.
