The fern has been a symbol of NZ for 100 years. Everyone has adopted it. It's not rugby, it speaks NZ on every international stage. It should not be stylised.
Black is our colour. But it should not be a sports flag. Green also drives to the heart of our beautiful country. Green speaks clean, mountains, flora and pounamu.
The southern cross is a nod to the Anzacs and unique to us and Australia as brothers in the pacific. Not to be forgotten.
Changing the flag is about breaking free from England. The Union Jack must go. Blue and red must go for the same reasons.
Kiwis are at risk of being extinct because of our own introduced pests. It would not be a good look having one on our flag if that happens.
This flag is a simple but distinctive fusion of all these symbols of pride in a timeless design.
I would have immense pride in this flag as it symbolises everything I love about living in New
Zealand and calling myself a Kiwi. Credit for the fern goes to Kyle Lockwood.
