A simple, strong flag. The predominant blue represents the ocean and the mountains, and is historically comnnected with New Zealand. The black is the clear night sky, and a colour frequently associated with this country's achievements. The Southern Cross, representing our geography and the guiding light for our ancestors, both Maori and European, tucks neatly into the prominent top corner. The white shaft of light has many meanings. It is Aotearoa, the Long White Cloud, as well as the simplification of a fern shape, the coastline and the snowy mountains. But it also forms a progressive, optimistic, upwards inclined arrow.
