THis design started out as being evolutionary, but has ended up quite revolutionary. A strong Maori inspired motif in black and red points to the Southern Cross on a blue background. The colours are respectful of the existing flag providing a strong link with the past. There is even a reference to the angles and colours of the Union Jack. The stars have been changed to white (the old red and white stars end up looking pink) and have been laid out symmetrically to give the design better balance. The flag is called Whakaterenga (Navigation) to honour the journeys the ancestors of all our citizens made, and to guide us as we move into the future. The blue represents the sky and the ocean, the white Aeotearoa, the Long White Cloud as well as the coastline and the snow capped mountains, and also the bow wave our great waka makes on its journey. The red respects the heritage of both Maori and Europeans. The black brings strength to the symbolism.
