"A grown up country doesn't need it's mother hanging around in the corner."
As an exiled Kiwi, engaging with the world through his art, I have been acutely aware of the problems the existing NZ flag has in representing its people. Having always had a love of flags I have long played with alternative flag designs for my country.
'The Fern' was created two years ago after many attempts to come up with something that was simple , obviously NZ and beautiful.
The fern is our national emblem. It is inclusive. It does not represent a religion, a culture or a race. It represents our whole nation.
Black and white are our national colours. This is unique and should be, in my opinion, the colours of our flag.
A few design points.
1/ The stem of the fern forms an upward path. The hope of a bright future.
2/ The flag represents a 'Z' when in original position. 'N' when reversed. (with a little imagination)
3/ The black band on the left edge gives a rootedness to the design and references the Hundertwasser flag, who could be considered one of those who started this whole debate.
