Island in The Sun
(from the song)
The country of my youth.
My design is a development upon the present New Zealand flag and the Union Jack, an extending and a zooming in upon the arms of the cross reaching toward the cross section, the center which is the same as a star and a sun. Reaching for, stretching out from, an on-going, two-way dynamic.
The Maori infuence is also present with the red sun sky and Aotearoa, Land of the Long White Cloud between sky and sea and or mountainous pinacles like rolling waves upon the sea.
Water, air, light = life. These three elements can suggest an atmosphere of life and fertility which also is an important quality of New Zealand.
A simple, bold, elegant, distinct design, modern and dynamic with it´s diagonal lines, signalling growth and development along nature and history´s course. The assymetry suggesting the new perfect, the imperfect perfect, with room for nature and for the unknown, which we meet willingly reflecting New Zealand´s spirit and energy.
Both sides of the flag are split at a third from the bottom. The diagonal through the middle stops at 3/4. The lower diagonal starts at 2/3.
