A remarkable future for us lies within the Pacific Rim and adjacent countries, whose people are well represented here in New Zealand. To celebrate this,
a new flag would signify our desire as a nation to face that future with strength: it should encourage our people to be proud, and to support one another in the accomplishment of their goals.
Symbolism in the flag Aotearoa:
The Silver Fern:
(Cyathea dealbata/Ponga) A simple yet central design theme, signifying all things living and spiritual, the fern contains elements of infinity, grace and truth.
The Southern Cross:
(Mahutonga) A powerful manifestation of Kaitiakitanga, which conveys collective guardianship over, and joint responsibility for, the planet’s natural resources, its treasures (taonga), its living and ancestral forms of life.
The Small Star:
(Epsilon crucis) Safe within Mahutonga is the Youth of New Zealand - our Future.
Honouring the Monarchy, and our flag history with its sense of beauty and simplicity.
