- The Maori creation story (e.g. fern, jawbone, cloud and the relationship between sky, land & water);
- The world famous distinctive Maori design vernacular;
- A flirtation with the Union Jack (e.g. red surrounded by thin white lines on a blue background);

- The bottom blue and white bars are also found in the flag of the Dutch province of Nieuw Zeeland.
