This flag was created in 2013 and the result of many years of playing with different ideas. The inspiration came from a Stacey Shaw design, which won a competition in 2004. The fern is our historical and internationally recognised emblem and black our unique national colour. I wanted to move away from our colonial colours of red, white and blue. Not just because they are the colours of Great Britain, but because they are the most common colour combination for International flags. New Zealand is a wonderfully unique country and deserves a flag that stands out amongst the rest.
Ratio 2:1 (British Standard) I felt it was important to keep the flag ratio the same as the present flag, which almost all Commonwealth countries adhere to.
