I feel it is important to retain the Southern Cross and blue background of our present flag out of respect for the people who founded our nation and who sacrificed their lives in its defence.
In this flag red is used to represent the land. I understand that red is the colour of "Papatuanuku", the Earth Mother and sustainer of all living things. This would seem an appropriate colour not just for the Tangata Whenua but for all New Zealanders.
The koru means new growth, strength, and peace. But as it has not yet unfurled into a silver fern it also represents the potential of our country.
The koru travels across the flag tying all the peoples of New Zealand together with the land.
The design is done in freehand. It needs a little computer software magic.
