As a nation there is certainly a strong bond with the current flag. If the flag must change, the new flag should be an evolution not a revolution.
Through its colours, imagery and composition, it should invoke a strong sense of familiarity so that the pride felt for our achievements under the current flag can continue.
The "NZ" essence of our current flag is the Southern Cross. It is really important that we keep this as it anchors our place in the world and guides all Kiwis home.
In removing the Union Jack, our opportunity is to replace this symbol of British heritage with a strong, simple and contemporary graphic that represents our Kiwi heritage and its Maori influence.
